Rhodes, Zandra

   b. 1940, Chatham
   Fashion designer
One of the most colourful and idiosyncratic figures in British design, Zandra Rhodes studied textiles at the Royal College of Art in the 1960s and launched her first solo collection in 1969. She developed a distinctive style, specializing in special occasion clothing such as ethereal dresses in unusual shapes, fabrics and colours with an emphasis on brightly coloured screen-printed textiles and hand finishing and decoration. Her own flamboyant image complemented her designs, and while her clothing is no longer at the cutting edge of fashion, Rhodes is still a popular figure in the British media.
